Terence P. McCarthy, Florida Bar Board Certified Real Estate Attorney

McCarthy, Summers, Wood, Norman, Melby & Schultz, P.A.

Hi Terry, can you give us a brief introduction?

I am a Board Certified Real Estate Attorney, specializing in land development/land use regulation, zoning law, variances and commercial/residential real estate closing transactions.  Our team brings our over 150 years of real estate knowledge and experience to the closing table, so no matter your real estate need we have the resources at our disposal to handle it in-house.

Tell us about your family and when you moved to the Treasure Coast?

My wife Sally and I moved to Stuart in 1973.  I had just taken the New York State Bar Exam and I came to Stuart to prepare for the Florida Bar Exam, and have been here ever since.  Our daughter, Katie, her husband, Mike McCarty, whom I get to collaborate with regularly, and their two children live close by.  My wife’s family is also here in town.

Give us some background on your career

Shortly after we moved to Stuart, I was lucky enough to land a position as the Assistant County Attorney for Martin County, and a few years later I was appointed the Martin County Attorney.  In 1977, I went into private practice with the law firm of Thurlow & Thurlow where I practiced real property law, and 1987 I was in the first group of lawyers in Florida to become Board Certified in Real Estate law.

In 1993, Bob Summers and I formed McCarthy and Summers.  Now, 25 years later, we are 12 lawyers strong practicing in a wide variety of disciplines, including real estate law, estate planning and elder law, family law, corporate law, and general litigation.  I have had the privilege of participating, as a board member and officer, in many of the nonprofit organizations that make our town so special, including The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, Stuart Main Street, the YMCA of the Treasure Coast and Treasure Coast Wildlife Hospital, to name a few.

What do you love about what you do?

We have the good fortune of living in an ever-growing area of Florida, but in a town whose residents take an active role in making sure that growth is balanced with keeping our small-town charm.  I get to have a hands-on role in working with city and county officials to make projects come to fruition, and that work is very satisfying.  I love that I am helping shape the town for my grandchildren and future generations to come, as well as helping locals succeed.
